Ever since the inception of photography and later, the moving image, visual media has been used to advocate for social change. Now, with visual communication increasing exponentially via the digital democratization of production and publication, it is more important than ever that individuals and organizations working for social justice understand the potential impact images can have and incorporate them effectively into their work.

HIGHLIGHTS

⦁ Past & Current practice – by exploring the trajectory of visual media for social change, we will investigate a range of issues and approaches relevant to anyone wishing to use images in their work on social justice. This will include looking at a range of visual approaches and best practices.
⦁ Ethics – We will explore issues of representation, collaborative methodologies, security and ‘truth’.
⦁ Impact – Here, we explore how to best prepare a communication strategy, from studying the issue, working with communities / civil society, to audiences / dissemination.
⦁ Practical exercises and discussion groups – A number of practical exercises and discussion groups will allow participants to synthesize what is explored in the workshop.
