WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This four- day workshop will challenge photographers to make engaging images within the world of the familiar, and finding visual ways to renew or discover a heightened level of curiosity and engagement with one’s visual environment. We will view, critique and reflect on photographs of well-known photographers as well as our own to expand our sense of visual literacy. This workshop will help participants explore and find their personal voice along with a way of seeing through the photographic medium.
WHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP COVER?
– Self identity: The workshop will encourage participants to discuss the idea of individuality and one’s place as a member of a cultural or community group.
– Community & ethics: How do you represent others and what is your responsibility as a photographer in communities other than your own.
– Storytelling: How do you sequence multiple images to reveal or demonstrate the complexity that goes beyond a single image.
– Time and multiple images: How can you use multiple images to describe a process, story or a person?
– Documentary truths and narrative fiction: The workshop will cover the processes of interviewing, journaling, and captioning as tools for bringing depth to the photographs and the photographic experience.
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Kevin Bubriski has been photographing Nepal for forty years since arriving here as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1975 to 1978. Kevin returned to Nepal in 2015 to document the earthquake’s devastation and recovery efforts in the Kathmandu Valley, Sindupalchok and Dolakha. His photographs were exhibited during Photo Kathmandu 2015. He was also one of the inaugural speakers of the Nepal Earthquake Summit at Dartmouth College.
Kevin’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Kevin is recipient of Guggenheim, Fulbright, NEA and Robert Gardner fellowships. His books include Portrait of Nepal, (1993) and Power Places of Kathmandu: Hindu and Buddhist Holy Sites in the Sacred Valley of Nepal (1995) and Maobadi (2011), a collection of portraits Nepal’s Maoist combatants. His recent book “Look into My Eyes: Nuevomexicanos Por Vida 81-83” was published in March 2016 with the Museum of New Mexico Press.
Kevin is an Associate Professor of Photography and Documentary Studies at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. Over the 2016-2017 academic year Kevin is on a Senior Scholar Fulbright Fellowship in Nepal.

Photographers of all levels, from beginner to professional, who want to explore and expand their experience and expertise with photographing people.

• This workshop is open to Nepali photographers and photo journalists.
• Five travel grants of Rs. 5000 each are available for participants from outside Kathmandu valley. Please state in your application if you would like to apply for a travel grant.
