Multi-disciplinary artist
Austria
Julia Schuster (b. 1989, Vienna, Austria) is a conceptual, multi-disciplinary artist based in London. She received her BA from the Faculty of Design and Arts in Bolzano, Italy and recently graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA in Ceramics. Before joining the Royal College of Art, she undertook a residency at the Glass and Ceramic School on the Danish island of Bornholm. There she produced the site specific sculpture Deadend, commenting on the loss of identity in the former fishing town Nexø, as well as the project Gendered Postures, which is based on observations of body language. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, across the UK and Europe. Her practice is driven by a fascination with the body, and its nature as our primal source of experience: its plurality of meanings and the socio-cultural questions embedded within it; from debates around gender and identity to embodiment, the senses, health and our obsessions with diet and perfect outer appearances. Inspired by dance, she is currently experimenting with translating movement into clay. Her latest body of work includes ceramic objects, a collaboration with a performer, sculpture, moving image and spoken word to create a space for contemplation and sensorial experience.
